<p>This study aims to examine Charles Le Gai Eaton’s (Hasan ‘Abd al-Hakim) assessments and proposed solutions to the epistemological and ontological crises that the modern age has brought about for humanity within a Sufi context. Contemporary research generally accepts the thesis that modernity, centred on secularisation, positivism and individualism, has distorted people’s perception of truth, severed them from their metaphysical roots and ancient spiritual traditions, and thus led them into crises of meaning and value. Given these crises of meaning and values, the fundamental problem addressed in this study is the inability of modern humans to find satisfactory answers to existential questions and, consequently, how to remedy the spiritual and moral turmoil experienced on an individual and societal level. In this context, the research focuses on Gai Eaton’s critique of modernity and Islam’s spiritual heritage, examining the solutions he proposes in the face of humanity’s crisis of meaning. The study employed document analysis; references to Islamic philosophy, Islamic Theology and Sufism were taken into consideration. Drawing on ancient philosophical and religious traditions, Gai Eaton’s works, speeches, and interviews reveal his critique of modernity and depictions of the crisis of meaning. In Eaton’s view, the modern era is not an ordinary period but an abnormal one in which humanity has severed its historical roots and the world of meaning has collapsed. According to him, modernity, the obvious cause of this situation, has not only condemned the individual to material values and relative norms, but has also distanced them from metaphysical reality and from thinking about the sacred. This situation has prevented the individual from thinking multidimensionally about their own existence, the universe and absolute truth, and has exacerbated humanity’s crisis of meaning and values. Eaton argues that the solution to this problem lies in the individual reconnecting with the traditional spiritual heritage and divine order, inviting his interlocutor to reflect on humanity, the universe, and the Qur‘an. In this context, Eaton’s views represent not only a stance against modernity but also a call for awakening aimed at reuniting humanity with truth.</p></trans-abstract>
