Asya Hunları hakkında bilgi edinilen ilk kaynaklar, Çince kaynaklardır. Ancak Hunların siyasi tarihleri dışında kalan adları ve unvanlarının anlaşılabilmesi için Çince bilmekten fazlası gerekmektedir. Özellikle unvanların Çince kaynaklarda Hunların dilindeki söyleyişinin Çincedeki transkripsiyonu olduğu düşünüldüğünde, bu durum daha da karmaşık hale gelmektedir. Bu unvanlardan biri Çin’e tabi olan Hun Tanrıkut’u Hu Hanye’nin altı oğlunun adına eklenen “Ruodi 若鞮” unvanıdır. Hunlar Monografilerinde onların unvanlarından bahseden bölümlerde yer almayan bu unvan, Hunca bir sözcüğün Çince transkripsiyonudur ve kaynaklara göre Çin hükümdarlarına öldükten sonra verilen unvan olan “Xiao’ın 孝” karşılığı olarak Hunlarda kullanılmıştır. “Xiao 孝” ise Konfüçyanist düşüncenin temel ilkelerindendir. Çalışmada, “Ruodi 若鞮” unvanının anlamının neye tekabül edebileceğinin anlaşılması amaçlanmış ve buna yönelik bir öneri getirilmiştir.
The first sources which include information about the Xiongnu are Chinese sources. But, in order to understand the names and titles of the Xiongnu people outside of their political history, it is necessary to know more than Chinese language. This situation becomes even more complicated, especially when one considers that the titles in Chinese sources are the Chinese transcription of the Xiongnu language pronunciation. One of these titles is the title "Ruodi 若鞮", which was added to the names of the six sons of Hu Hanye, the Xiongnu Chanyu who was subject to Han Dynasty. This title, which is not included in the sections mentioning their titles in the Xiongnu Monographs, is a Chinese transcription of a Xiongnu word and according to sources, it used by the Xiongnu as the equivalent of "Xiao 孝", the title given to Chinese rulers as posthumous title. "“Xiao 孝” is one of the basic principles of Confucian thought. This study aims to understand what the meaning of "Ruodi 若鞮" could correspond and gives a suggestion in this direction.
