Lisans Öğrencilerinin Sosyal Medya Bağımlılığı ile Genel Akademik Başarıları Arasındaki İlişkinin İncelenmesi

Öz

Bu çalışma, lisans öğrencilerinin sosyal medya bağımlılığı ile genel akademik başarıları arasındaki ilişkiyi incelemektedir. Araştırma, Sakarya Üniversitesi ve Sakarya Uygulamalı Bilimler Üniversitesi’nde öğrenim gören 226 lisans öğrencisiyle gerçekleştirilmiştir. Araştırmada veri toplama aracı olarak Sosyal Medya Bağımlılığı Ölçeği ile Genel Akademik Başarı Ölçeği kullanılmıştır. Veriler, yapılandırılmış anket formu aracılığıyla toplanılmış olup elde edilen bulgular, öğrencilerin büyük çoğunluğunun günde yaklaşık üç ila dört saat sosyal medya kullandığını ve Instagram’ın en yaygın sosyal medya platformu olduğunu göstermektedir. Yapılan istatistiksel analizler, sosyal medya bağımlılığı ile akademik başarı arasında pozitif ancak sınırlı düzeyde anlamlı bir ilişki olduğunu ortaya koymuştur. Bu durum, sosyal medya kullanımının dijital öğrenme kaynaklarına erişim ve akademik içerik paylaşımı açısından belirli avantajlar sağlayabileceğine işaret etmektedir. Bununla birlikte, elde edilen bulgular sosyal medya bağımlılığı ile akademik başarı arasında nedensel bir ilişki olduğunu göstermemektedir. Bu nedenle sonuçların dikkatle yorumlanması ve farklı örneklemlerle yapılacak yeni çalışmalarla desteklenmesi önerilmektedir.

EXAMINING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SOCIAL MEDIA ADDICTION AND GENERAL ACADEMIC SUCCESS OF UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

Öz

This study examines the relationship between undergraduate students’ social media addiction and their general academic achievement. The research was conducted with a sample of 226 undergraduate students studying at Sakarya University and Sakarya University of Applied Sciences. The Social Media Addiction Scale and the General Academic Achievement Scale were used as data collection instruments. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire, and the findings indicate that the most of students spend approximately three to four hours per day on social media, with Instagram being the most widely used platform. Statistical analyses revealed a positive but limited significant relationship between social media addiction and academic achievement. This finding suggests that social media use may provide certain advantages in terms of access to digital learning resources and academic content sharing. However, the findings do not indicate a causal relationship between social media addiction and academic achievement. Therefore, the results should be interpreted with caution and supported by further studies conducted with different samples.
