The region of Mā warāʾ al-nahr was historically been a geographical centere where prominent scholars of the Hanafī-Māturīdī theological understanding lived. Māturīdīsm, one of the two theological schools still accepted in the Islamic world today, originated in this region. Nūr al-Dīn al-Sābūnī (d. 580/1184), one of the significant representatives of the Hanafī-Māturīdī theology in the 6th/12th century Hijri, was a respected scholar in his time and recognized for his views. He was a theologian who gave lessons lectures and wrote works to address the theological problems of the public in a language they could understand. This article examines al-Sābūnī’s views on the attributes of the prophets. Living some approximately two and a half centuries after Māturīdī, al-Sābūnī’s scholarly opinions on the attributes of the prophets are crucial for tracing the development of the discourse. The study is primarily confined to al-Sābūnī’s views and works, although references is made to Māturīdī’s works have also been made when necessary. The research study seeks to establish a connection between ideas and events by employing using the research methods of social sciences in general, and the disciplines of theology (ilm al-kalām) and the history of Islamic sects in particular. The study concludes that, like other theologians of his time, al-Sābūnī did not establish a separaten independent section dedicated devoted to the attributes of the prophets. He accepted the fundamental attributes for prophets as being human, intelligent, trustworthy, receiving revelation, conveying the message, and being infallibleility (ismah), sharing the same view as Māturīdī on these points. However, al-Sābūnī diverges differs from Māturīdī by omitting any mention in his works of Māturīdī’s view that prophets must be come from urban areas.
Maveraünnehir bölgesi, Hanefî-Mâtürîdî kelâm anlayışının önde gelen âlimlerine ev sahipliği yapmış bir coğrafyadır. Günümüzde İslam dünyasında kabul gören iki kelâm ekolünden biri olan Mâtürîdîlik, bu bölgede doğmuştur. Hanefî-Mâtürîdî kelâmının Hicri 6./12. yüzyıldaki önemli temsilcilerinden olan Nureddin es-Sâbûnî (öl. 580/1184), yaşadığı dönemde bu bölgenin saygın âlimleri arasında yer almış ve görüşleriyle kabul görmüştür. O, halkın itikâdî sorunlarına onların anlayabileceği bir dille cevap üretmek amacıyla dersler veren ve eserler kaleme alan bir mütekellimdir. Bu makalede, Sâbûnî’nin peygamberlerin sıfatlarına dair görüşleri incelenmiştir. Mâtürîdî’den yaklaşık iki buçuk asır sonra yaşamış olan Sâbûnî’nin bu konudaki görüş ve değerlendirmeleri, süreç takibi açısından önem taşımaktadır. Çalışma, esasen Sâbûnî’nin görüşleri ve eserleri ile sınırlı tutulmuş, fakat zaman zaman Mâtürîdî’nin eserlerine de başvurulmuştur. Araştırmada, genel anlamda sosyal bilimlerin, özelde ise ilm-i kelâm ve mezhepler tarihi disiplinlerinin araştırma yöntemleri kullanılarak fikir ve olaylar arasındaki bağlantı kurulmaya çalışılmıştır. Çalışmanın sonucunda, Sâbûnî’nin, dönemin diğer kelâmcıları gibi peygamberlerin sıfatlarına dair müstakil bir başlık açmadığı tespit edilmiştir. Sâbûnî, peygamberler için temel nitelikler olarak “beşer olmak, akıllı ve zeki olmak, güvenilir olmak, vahiy almak, tebliğ etmek ve ismet” sıfatlarını kabul etmiş ve bu hususlarda Mâtürîdî ile aynı görüşü paylaşmıştır. Ancak Mâtürîdî’nin “peygamberlerin şehirli olması gerektiği” yönündeki kanaatine eserlerinde yer vermeyerek ondan ayrılmıştır.
