Jurgen Habermas ve Nancy Fraser, kamusal alan teorisyenleridir. Habermas’ın düşünsel dünyası ‘burjuva sınıfı’, ‘akıl’, ‘evrensellik’ ve ‘uzlaşı’ kavramları üzerinden modernist bir izleğe sahipken; Fraser, ‘toplumsal cinsiyet’, ‘özdüşünüm’, ‘farklılık’ ve ‘çatışma’ kavramları üzerinden postmodernist bir güzergâhı takip eder. Tarihsel ve toplumsal açıdan birbirinden farklı kamusal alan yaklaşımlarına sahip bu iki kuramcının yolu Filistin-İsrail Savaşı dolayısıyla yeniden kesişir. 7 Ekim 2023 tarihinde yoğunlaşan savaş ortamını takiben Fraser ve çevresi, önce felsefecileri sonra dünya kamuoyunu Filistinliler ile dayanışmaya çağıran bir bildiri yayımlarken; hemen akabinde Habermas ve arkadaşları, İsrail Devleti’ni olumlayan ve İsrail’in var olma hakkını sorgulayan tutumları reddeden bir metin kaleme alırlar. Bu çalışmada her iki bildiride inşa edilen söylem, dilsel biçimleri ve toplumsal bağlamıyla birlikte ele alınmış; bu metinlerde kurulan anlatı, Habermas ile Fraser’ın kamusal alan yaklaşımları ve entelektüel serüvenleriyle birlikte karşılaştırmalı olarak analiz edilmiştir. Genel olarak bakıldığında, Habermas ve Fraser’ın kamusal alan yaklaşımları ile mevcut savaş ortamında aldıkları entelektüel pozisyon arasında bir tutarlılık olduğu söylenebilir. Habermas, İsrail Devleti etrafında oluşacak ve Yahudilere dönük geçmişteki Nazi zulmünü hep akılda tutacak bir uzlaşıyı rasyonel bir siyasi yaşamın ve evrensel bir ahlaki birliğin temeli olarak konumlandırırken; Fraser, yurttaşların kendi bilinçlerini ve devletlerini İsrail ile ekonomi-politik ve ideolojik bağları esasında sorguladıkları bir özdüşünümü, öteki olanla kurulan saygı odaklı bir teması, diyalog ve iletişimi öne çıkaran kamusal bir konuşmayı esas alır.
Jurgen Habermas and Nancy Fraser are theorists of the public sphere. While Habermas's intellectual world has a modernist path through the concepts of ‘bourgeois class’, ‘reason’, ‘universality’ and ‘consensus’; Fraser follows a postmodernist path through the concepts of ‘gender’, ‘self-reflection’, ‘difference’ and ‘conflict’. The paths of these two theorists, who have historically and socially different approaches to the public sphere, intersect again due to the Palestine-Israel War. Following the intensifying war environment on October 7, 2023, Fraser and his circle published a declaration calling first philosophers and then the world public opinion to show solidarity with the Palestinians; afterwards, Habermas and his friends wrote a text affirming the State of Israel and rejecting attitudes that question Israel's right to exist. In this study, the discourse constructed in both declarations is examined together with its linguistic forms and social context; the narrative established in these texts has been analyzed comparatively together with Habermas and Fraser's public sphere approaches and intellectual adventures. In general, it can be said that there is a consistency between Habermas and Fraser's public sphere approaches and the intellectual positions they take in the current war environment. While Habermas positions a consensus around the State of Israel that will always keep in mind the past Nazi persecution of the Jews as the basis of a rational political life and a universal moral unity; Fraser is based on a self-reflection in which citizens question their own consciousness and state on the basis of their economic-political and ideological ties with Israel, a respect-oriented contact with the other, and a public conversation that emphasizes dialogue and communication.
