Abstract

Cultural heritage consists of tangible and intangible cultural values. Rugs, which are included in the intangible cultural heritage, are among the most important handwoven items in terms of both reflecting cultural values and conveying touristic value. The primary motivation of the research is to reveal the cultural values embedded in these handicrafts and their importance in the tourism context. In this context, the aim of the research is the research aims to examine Kayseri region rugs as a cultural heritage element within the context of a sustainable tourist product. The research employed a qualitative interview-based design. The interviews were conducted as in-depth, semi-structured interviews using semi-structured interview guides. Interviews were conducted with participants engaged in rug weaving and in the marketing of rugs as tourist products. The interview data were analyzed using descriptive and content analyses, yielding specific themes. As a result of the research, it was concluded that the main motifs in the rugs are “elibelinde,” “pıtrak,” “ram's horn,” “tree of life,” and various types of votive offerings, and that these motifs reflect cultural values. In addition, it has been determined that geographical conditions are instrumental in the emergence of rugs and that they have a tourist product value in attracting tourists to tourism destinations. To ensure the sustainability of rugs as cultural heritage, weaving culture should be sustained through various incentives, and rug museums should be established.
