Abstract

Multicultural counseling has gained an important place in counselor education since the role of culture in counseling process was comprehended. Sensitivity to diversity as accepted one of the main counselor competencies is tried to be provided by counselor education programs through various models in USA and in many other countries. It is believed that counselor education programs in Turkey should also take steps in this matter. In the present study, how multicultural counseling training can be accommodated within Turkish guidance and counseling undergraduate programs and how multicultural counseling competencies can be gained were elaborated. In this respect, first, the client and the counselor candidate profiles in Turkey were evaluated through a cultural perspective. Later, multicultural counselor competencies and their importance in counseling training were briefly underscored. In the context of multicultural counseling training, the levels counselor education programs have passed through were briefly defined. Information about multicultural counseling training models (separate course, integration and infusion and areas of concentration) that have significant role in teaching multicultural counseling competencies were briefly provided. Finally, in the light of these models some suggestions were provided about how in case of integrating a course into guidance and counseling bachelor programs this course’s content and learning and teaching process can be designed, how practicum opportunities can be provided to counselor candidates and how multicultural competencies can be gained through all elements of the programs

Çok Kültürlü Psikolojik Danışma Eğitiminin Rehberlik ve Psikolojik Danışmanlık Lisans Programlarına Yerleştirilmesi

Year 2013, Volume: 4 Issue: 40, 222 - 231, 30.09.2013
