                            <p>This study primarily aims to conduct an in-depth investigation into the conceptual misunderstandings of prospective elementary mathematics teachers concerning algebraic binary operations. Employing a qualitative case study design, the research is situated within the framework of the fundamental role of concepts in learning and the impeding effect of conceptual misunderstandings on subject matter knowledge acquisition. The study involved 89 prospective teachers from various grade levels within an elementary mathematics education program. A 10-item data collection instrument, developed by the researchers and comprising both mathematical operation and open-ended questions, was utilized. The data analysis process incorporated expert opinions from the field and repeated evaluations to enhance validity and reliability. The findings derived from the data collection instrument revealed a prevalent occurrence of conceptual misunderstandings regarding binary operations among the prospective teachers, with the incidence exceeding 50%. In conclusion, it was observed that the concept of &quot;binary operation&quot; was not fully formed among the candidates, and even those who did not exhibit conceptual misunderstandings often struggled to fully articulate other properties of operations.</p></trans-abstract>
                                                                                                                                    <abstract><p>Bu çalışmanın temel amacı, ilköğretim matematik öğretmenliği programında öğrenim gören öğrencilerin cebirsel ikili işlemler konusundaki kavram yanılgılarını derinlemesine incelemektir. Kavramların öğrenme süreçlerindeki temel rolü ve kavram yanılgılarının alan bilgisi edinimindeki engelleyici etkisi bağlamında bir nitel durum çalışması gerçekleştirilmiştir. Farklı sınıf düzeylerinden 89 öğretmen adayının katılımıyla yürütülen çalışmada, araştırmacılar tarafından geliştirilen matematiksel işlem ve açık uçlu sorular içeren 10 soruluk bir veri toplama aracı kullanılmıştır. Verilerin analiz sürecinde alan uzmanı görüşleri alınmış ve tekrarlı değerlendirmelerle geçerlik ve güvenirlik sağlanmaya çalışılmıştır. Veri toplama aracından elde edilen bulgulara göre öğretmen adaylarının ikili işlemler konusunda genel olarak kavram yanılgısı yaşadıklarını ortaya koymuştur. Bu oranın %50’nin üzerinde olduğu söylenebilir. Sonuç olarak adaylarda “ikili işlem” kavramının tam olarak oluşmadığı, kavram yanılgısı yaşamayan adaylarda ise diğer işlem özelliklerinin tam olarak ifade edilemediği gözlemlenmiştir.</p></abstract>
