                                                                                                <abstract><p>İvan Konstantinoviç Ayvazovski (1817–1900) milliyetçi tarih yazımının köşeli çerçeveleri içerisindeincelenmiş ve bu anlayışın dışına çıkmayan yüzeysel araştırmalara konu olduğu ölçüde sanat tarihi yazımıiçerisinde yer almıştır. Bir taraftan Rus donanmasının baş ressamı, diğer taraftan prestijli St. PetersburgGüzel Sanatlar Akademisi mezunu ve sonrasında aynı kurumda profesör olmayı başararak kazanmış olduğugörünürlük, bu itibarlı konumunun verdiği ayrıcalık ile, onu resmi tarih anlatısının içine hapsetmiştir.Oysa, İvan Konstantinoviç Ayvazovski’yi görsel sanatlar ile kimlik ve mekân algısının tahayyülü ve inşasıarasındaki organik bağı kültürlerarası bir iletişim ağı içinde incelemek, sanatçıyı çok katmanlı bir düşünselzenginlikle ele almayı mümkün kılar. On dokuzuncu yüzyılın sanat ortamı bağlamında Ayvazovski’ninsanatının nasıl kullanıldığının aydınlatılması, aynı zamanda, on dokuzuncu yüzyıl sanat dünyasının dahanet bir biçimde anlaşılmasını ve o yüzyılın politik ortamının temelini oluşturan belirli ulusal kimliklerinnasıl ortaya çıktığının kavranmasını da kolaylaştıracaktır.Rus ve Osmanlı bağlamlarında Ayvazovski’nin çalışmalarını kesişen kimliklerinin (Rus, Rus-Ermeni veErmeni) etkisi altında incelemek, Osmanlı İmparatorluğu, Rusya ve Avrupa arasında on dokuzuncu yüzyılaait bir görsel kültür ve kültür diplomasisi anlayışını yaratmaktadır. Ayvazovski böylece sadece Rus, Ermenive Osmanlı/Türk sanat tarihinin en önemli figürlerinden biri değil, aynı zamanda bu ulusal geleneklerinkesiştiği bir anın somut bir göstergesi konumuna da gelmiştir. Bu çalışma, aynı zamanda, çok uluslu birkaraktere sahip ressam ve vatandaş olarak Ayvazovski’ye odaklanarak ulusal sınırların ötesinde dahageniş bir coğrafya olarak tanımlayabileceğimiz “Karadeniz” bağlamıyla kesişecek ve birleşecektir.</p></abstract>
