An Analysis of the Elementary School Turkish Language Curriculum in Terms of Literacy Skills

Abstract

Curriculum, which are among the most important elements of the learning-teaching process, are updated in accordance with the requirements of the times. This study aims to examine the distribution of literacies included in the 2024 Elementary School Turkish Language Curriculum—updated within the framework of the Turkey Century Education Model—across curriculum components and by grade level. The study was conducted in accordance with a qualitative research design. The 2024 Elementary School Turkish Language Curriculum published by the Ministry of National Education (MEB) was analyzed in this study. Descriptive analysis was used to analyze the data obtained. The study found that the literacies examined were incorporated into the curriculum’s structure, fundamental approach, specific objectives, cross-curricular components, learning-teaching experiences, principles regarding curriculum implementation, and themes. It was determined that the curriculum includes a total of nine literacies across all grade levels: visual literacy, information literacy, digital literacy (as a form of technology literacy), multiple literacies, critical literacy, financial literacy, cultural literacy, sustainability literacy, data literacy, and citizenship literacy. It can be said that the literacies included in the 2024 Elementary School Turkish Language Curriculum encompass the skills individuals need to adapt to the modern era.
