This study examines the relationship between the feeling of shame and the subject's demand for recognition in the modern Turkish novel through a comparative analysis. Within the scope of the study, Peyami Safa’s The Ninth External Ward and Yusuf Atılgan’s Motherland Hotel are analyzed within a theoretical framework focusing on the social dimension of emotions. In the texts, shame is conceptualised not so much as an individual and internal psychological state, but rather as an experience that arises within the context of the subject’s capacity to form social bonds and the possibility of being recognised by the "other." As a result of the qualitative comparative text analysis, it is observed that the experience of humiliation produces destructive effects on the characters in both novels; however, this process operates on different structural levels. While shame in The Ninth External Ward appears as a rupture triggered within specific encounters and remains partially compensable through the object of love, the state of non-recognition in Motherland Hotel gains continuity and transforms into a structural deficiency that threatens the character's existence. These findings point to the evolving forms of representation of shame in the modern Turkish novel, moving from an individual pang to a systemic alienation.
Bu çalışma, modern Türk romanında utanç duygusunun öznenin tanınma talebiyle ilişkisini karşılaştırmalı bir analizle incelemektedir. Çalışma kapsamında Peyami Safa’nın Dokuzuncu Hariciye Koğuşu (1930) ile Yusuf Atılgan’ın Anayurt Oteli (1973) romanları, duyguların toplumsal boyutunu merkeze alan kuramsal bir çerçeve içinde ele alınmıştır. Metinlerde utanç; bireysel ve içsel bir psikolojik durumdan ziyade, öznenin toplumsal bağ kurma kapasitesi ve öteki tarafından tanınma imkânı bağlamında ortaya çıkan bir deneyim olarak kavramsallaştırılmaktadır. Nitel karşılaştırmalı metin analizi yöntemiyle yürütülen çalışma sonucunda, her iki romanda da aşağılanma deneyiminin karakterler üzerinde yıkıcı etkiler ürettiği, ancak bu sürecin farklı yapısal düzlemlerde işlediği tespit edilmiştir. Dokuzuncu Hariciye Koğuşu’nda utanç, belirli karşılaşmalar içinde tetiklenen ve sevgi nesnesi aracılığıyla kısmen telafi edilebilir bir kırılma olarak belirirken; Anayurt Oteli’nde tanınmama hâli süreklilik kazanarak karakterin varoluşunu tehdit eden yapısal bir eksikliğe dönüşmektedir. Elde edilen bulgular, modern Türk romanında utancın bireysel bir sancıdan sistemik bir yabancılaşmaya doğru dönüşen temsil biçimlerine işaret etmektedir.
