Developing Light Engineering Industry from Repurposing E-Waste in Bangladesh

Abstract

Electronic waste (e-waste) refers to disposed electrical and electronic equipment. In Bangladesh, e-waste offers resource potential as well as environmental concern. The growing prominence of e-waste has the potential for contributing to resource recovery and industrial development in the context of the light engineering industry. There is still a large research gap in establishing connections among the existing literature in these aspects, which are available and relevant to the Bangladeshi context. To manage these challenges, an approach is required that links sustainability with the development of formalized, safe, and regionally appropriate industries. A qualitative approach that combines secondary statistical data analysis with spatial evaluation is adopted for this research. An indexing framework assesses existing facilities based on spatial efficiency, environmental performance, and worker safety, drawing from comparative case studies and theoretical grounding in circular economy principles and sustainable design guidelines. To bridge these gaps, the research investigates how context-responsive architectural strategies might enhance sustainability, efficiency, and safety. This will help Bangladesh to explore a potential to establish integrated light engineering industries by formally managing e-waste within a new multidisciplinary framework.
