Osmanlı Devleti’nin son dönemlerinde yaşanan siyâsî ve ekonomik problemler, devlet ve toplum hayatının şekillenmesinde, geleneksel değerlerle Batılı unsurların ilişkisi meselesini gündeme getirmiştir. 1908 yılında, Kanun-ı Esasî’nin yeniden yürürlüğe konulmasıyla ortaya çıkan basın yayın hürriyeti, gazeteler ve dergiler vasıtasıyla toplumu ilgilendiren siyasi, dîni ve ekonomiye dair konuların tartışılmasına zemin hazırlamıştır. Bu dönemin yayınlarından biri olan Sırat-ı Müstakim Dergisi’nde din, edebiyat, felsefe, hukuk gibi konulardan bahsedilmiştir. Değişen toplumun problemlerine çözümler aranırken toplumun temel taşı olan aile ve kadın meselesi üzerinde de yazılar yayınlanmıştır. Sırat-ı Müstakim’de kadınlar özelinde “Müslüman kadını” başlıklı yazı dizisi neşredilmiş, değişen toplumda Müslüman kadının konumu belirlenmeye çalışılmıştır. Toplumun gelişmesi ve nesillerin yetişmesinde aktif rolü olan kadının, Batılı fikirlerle İslâmî gelenek arasında muhafaza edeceği değerler bağlamında görüşler ortaya konmuştur. Muhammed Ferid Vecdi tarafından yazılan “Müslüman Kadını” eseri Mehmet Akif Ersoy tarafından tercüme edilerek Sırat-ı Müstakim Dergisi’nde haftalık olarak yayınlanmıştır. Toplumsal değişim içindeki kadının konumlanması gereken yeri tespit açısından dönemin bakışını ortaya koymak önemli olacaktır. Böylece günümüzde halen tartışılmaya devam eden kadın ve tesettür konusunun, Cumhuriyet’in kurulması sürecine giden yolda nasıl değerlendirdiğini dikkatlerinize sunmuş olacağız.
The political and economic changes experienced in the last periods of the Ottoman Empire have also brought up the issue of the relationship between traditional values and modern elements in the shaping of state and social life. The freedom of press and publication, which emerged with the re-enactment of the Kanun-i Esasî in 1908, enabled the discussion of political, religious, economic and political issues concerning the society through newspapers and magazines. One of the publications of this period, the Journal of Sırat-ı Müstakim, mentioned subjects such as religion, literature, philosophy and law. While searching for solutions to the problems of society, articles were published on the family and women issue, which is the cornerstone of society. A series of articles titled "Muslim women", specifically for women, was published in Sırat-ı Müstakim, and the position of Muslim women in the changing society was tried to be determined. Opinions have been put forward in the context of the issue of values that women, who have an active role in the development of society and the upbringing of generations, will preserve between Western ideas and Islamic tradition. The work titled "Muslim Woman", written by Muhammed Ferid Vecdi, was translated by Mehmet Akif Ersoy and published weekly in the Journal of Sırat-ı Müstakim. It will be important to reveal the perspective of the period in terms of determining the place where women should be positioned in social change. Thus, it will be revealed how the issue of women and hijab, which is still being discussed today, is evaluated on the way to the establishment of the Republic.
