Comparative analysis of the temporal and spatial changes in land use in Kozan (Adana) county

Abstract

In today's world, the needs of human beings are constantly increasing. As the economic value of agricultural products and the importance of food security increase, the correct and sustainable use of agricultural lands has become more important. Agriculture is directly related to both production processes and the use of natural resources. However, the protection and efficient use of these rich natural resources is of great importance in line with sustainable development goals. This situation causes the use of land in the world to change continuously from past to present. The main reason for this change is the increasing population and economic needs and the developments in economic infrastructure. In this context, there is a similar development in Kozan county, which is the subject of this research. Land use in Kozan county of Adana province has shown significant changes from past to present. This situation is especially evident in settlement and agricultural areas. In this study, the changes in land use status in Kozan county from 1990 to present were examined using CORINE land cover and Esri Living Atlas data. Land cover was examined on the basis of eight classes re-created based on CORINE classification. The largest proportional change between 1990-2023 occurred positively in settlement areas (343.6%). This was followed by expansions in irrigated field agriculture and orchards. The largest decrease occurred in bare lands and non-irrigated arable lands. It was determined that the least change in terms of surface area occurred in forest areas (-1.7%).
