This study examines the concept of hesitation within the framework of Tzvetan Todorov’s theory of the fantastic in Russian literature of the first half of the 19th century. It is limited to A.S. Pushkin’s The Queen of Spades, M.Yu. Lermontov’s The Demon, and N.V. Gogol’s The Portrait. Rather than defining these works directly as fantastic, the study evaluates them according to Todorov’s conditions of the fantastic and his principle of hesitation. Focusing on moments of hesitation experienced by both reader and protagonist, the analysis explores the narratives’ positions between the uncanny and the marvelous. Through close reading, narrative analysis, and comparative analysis, the study examines the modes of explaining supernatural events, ambiguous expressions, and the resolution or non-resolution at the end of each narrative in light of Todorov’s criteria. The study compares the maintenance of hesitation across the three works, identifies the linguistic and structural devices that sustain it, and classifies the texts according to their orientation toward the uncanny or the marvelous. It concludes that sustained hesitation is achieved only in The Queen of Spades, whereas in The Demon, the acceptance of the supernatural, and in The Portrait, the allegorical nature of extraordinary elements eliminate the fantastic.
Bu çalışma, 19. yüzyılın ilk yarısı Rus edebiyatında fantastik unsurlar içeren anlatılarda Tzvetan Todorov’un fantastik kuramı çerçevesinde kararsızlık kavramını incelemektedir. Çalışma A.S. Puşkin’in Maça Kızı (Pikovaya dama, 1834), M.Yu. Lermontov’un İblis (Demon, 1839) ve N.V. Gogol’ün Portre (Portret, 1835) adlı eserleri ile sınırlandırılır. Çalışmada bu eserler doğrudan fantastik olarak tanımlanmak yerine Todorov’un fantastik koşulları ve kararsızlık ilkesi temelinde değerlendirilmektedir. İnceleme, okurun ve kahramanın kararsızlık anlarını odağa alarak anlatıların olağanüstü ile tekinsiz arasındaki konumunu tartışmaktadır. Metin çözümlemesi, anlatı analizi ve karşılaştırmalı analiz yöntemleri çerçevesinde, olağanüstü olayların açıklanma biçimi, muğlak anlatım ifadeleri ve anlatı sonundaki çözülme ya da çözülmeme durumu Todorov’un kararsızlık ölçütleri doğrultusunda incelenmektedir. Bu çalışma, Todorov’un kararsızlık ilkesinin üç eserdeki süreklilik durumunu karşılaştırmakta, dilsel ve yapısal araçlarını belirlemekte ve anlatıların tekinsiz ya da olağanüstüye yönelme biçimlerini sınıflandırmaktadır. İnceleme sonucunda, kararsızlığın yalnızca Maça Kızı’nda sürdürülebilir olduğu, İblis’te doğaüstü olayların kabul edilmesi ve Portre’de olağanüstü unsurların alegori içermesi nedeniyle fantastiğin ortadan kalktığı tespit edilmiştir.
