<p>This study examines Toni Hill’s novel El oscuro adiós de Teresa Lanza/Teresa Lanza’s Dark Farewell through the concept of symbolic violence developed by French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu. Various discourses within the work, which serves as the primary source of the study, are exemplified through representations of violence directed at Latin American immigrants who moved to Spain for economic reasons. The study aims to analyze, within a literary framework, the symbolic violence endured by Latin American individuals, including the protagonist Teresa Lanza, in the fictional Barcelona neighborhood of Castellverd. In the novel, symbolic violence is observed through the treatment of the Honduran immigrant Teresa Lanza, who works as a domestic helper in five houses in an affluent district of Barcelona, and her friends Jimmy and Deisy, who are viewed merely in terms of their roles in the service sector. They are treated as invisible, voiceless ghosts and are excluded from decisions regarding their own lives. This situation reveals an invisible wall, and indeed a class distinction, between Spaniards and immigrants. Symbolic violence is further manifested as Teresa is unknowingly implicated in an act of euthanasia and a money laundering scheme. With this work, author Toni Hill criticizes the lack of immigrant protagonists in Spanish literature and interrogates the invisible presence of migrants.</p></trans-abstract>
