Natural Cyst Shedding in Calves Infected with Giardia Duodenalis

Abstract

The present study was carried out on field conditions, involving 9 diarrhetic calves naturally ınfected with Giardia duodenalis in different districts of Aydın region. Precise diagnosis has confirmed by Nested PCR analysis of cases, to these of which in immunochromatographic rapid diagnostic test kits revealed G. duodenalis antigens as regarding cyst excretion. Following cysts count in gram stool (Macmaster method), the geometric means on days  0., 3., 7. ve 10.  were determined 18412.60; 10504.26; 17675.21 ve 10767.17 respectively. Initial values (day 0) compared with the 3rd, 7th days revealed in significant reduction, besides on day 7, in comparison to 3rd and 10th days, insignificant increase. All fecal samples were deemed positive with Nested PZR analysis. According to present authours knowledge this study carried out in calves infected with G. duodenalis via PCR, determination of natural cyst shedding may provide future directions for  arasitological, clinical and molecular studies. And also it was concluded that the latter study may provide valuable contribution to the regional infection map. It must also be taken into account G. duodenalis as a forgotten etiological agent, involved in calf diarrhea causing economical loss in our country.
