Abstract

Surgical Treatment of Cranioshisis and Meningocele in a Newborn Calf Summary Congenital cranial diseases pose life-threatening risks to all animals and include cases that can result in death. In this study, we aimed to provide information about a case of meningocele due to craniosis in a 1-day-old male Simmental calf. Clinical and radiographic examinations revealed cranioschisis and meningoceles in the calf. The operative procedure was performed considering the favorable general condition of the animal. During the operative procedure, the skin piece forming the swelling on the skull was removed with an elliptical enzyme, and the cranial defect with a diameter of 4 cm was closed by narrowing the connective tissue in the region. Intraoperative complications were not observed. In the postoperative follow-up, the calf did not show any neurologic findings in the 2nd week and 2nd month controls and the general health status of the calf was good. In conclusion, in this study, it was thought that early intervention in small defects and treatment of the defect with tissue sutures could be successful, and it may be important to evaluate the operative procedure instead of euthanasia in diseases with poor prognosis.
