<p>Moral identity is a concept that has been developed to explain moral behaviors performed without aiming for a rational benefit or without much thought, and its effects on variables such as moral actions and well-being have been demonstrated in many studies, but a clear approach to how it is formed and why it affects well-being has not been developed. In the study, the concept of basic psychological need satisfaction, which is used by self-determination theory, which is essentially a theory of motivation, to explain issues such as internalization of values and behaviors, and well-being, is used to illuminate these closed aspects of moral identity. For this purpose, the findings obtained from 589 academicians working in various state universities in Türkiye show that moral identity positively affects the basic psychological needs of relatedness, competence and autonomy in a way to satisfy these needs. When this result is evaluated in terms of self-determination theory, it shows that moral identity exhibits identity characteristics that develop in harmony with the self and positively affect well-being because it contains features that satisfy basic psychological needs.</p></trans-abstract>
