The paratext comprises essential documentary elements such as colophons recording copying and re-copying, ownership notes recording circulation, and readerly annotations that illuminate the text–reader relationship and demonstrate how manuscripts accumulate layers of use over time. The catchword is one such paratext, written in the lower-left corner of the verso to repeat the first word(s) of the following recto. This article traces how internal ordering systems in Islamic manuscripts developed and identifies key historical turning points. Its central question is whether it is possible to discern changes in catchword practice over time, beyond its well-known role as a tool of organization. Accordingly, this study seeks to analyze catchword practices from a historical angle, with particular attention to their codicological features. Using Fazıl Ahmed Paşa Collection of Süleymaniye Library as a case study, it sheds light on broader organizational strategies, with special emphasis on catchwords.</p>
