Association between Hair Whitening and Hair Loss Scores and Erectile Dysfunction
Abstract
Aim: Aging is a physiological process that can’t be prevented by human beings, and in this process, hair loss and whitening are often seen after 50 years of age.
There have been recent studies showing that there is a relationship between hair whitening or losing and oxidative stress. It is also a known fact that the incidence of erectile dysfunction (ED) due to atherosclerosis, especially oxidative stress, is increasing in later ages. In this study we wanted to investigate the relationship between scoring systems for evaluating these two clinical entities that share a common etiology.
Material and Methods: 50 erectile dysfunction patients and 50 healthy controls were included in the study. Patients in both groups were questioned about the presence of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, Peyronie’s disease and smoking status. IEEF-5 scores, weight, waist and hip circumferences, serum levels of testosterone, LH, FSH, prolactin, albumin and fasting blood glucose of all participants were obtained. Gray / white hair scale and hair losing scale were used in hair evaluation.
Results: The presence of diabetes, hypertension, coronary artery disease, serum glucose, albumin and testosterone levels, weight and waist circumferences were significantly different in ED group compared to the controls. Gray/white hair scale and hair loss scale in the ED group were also significantly different compared to the controls.
Conclusion: In our urology polyclinics, in patients with premature hair whitening or losing, we need to question about ED which may be caused by oxidative stress, even in patients with other complaits.
