OBJECTIVE: In our study of prefrontal cortex on the positive effects of omega - 3 fatty acids was aimed to investigate the biochemical level.

METHODS: During our study used 16 Wistar - Albino male rats in the two groups were divided. Rats in Group I are used as control group and they are only intragastric gavaged with normal saline. Rats in group II, 0.4 g / kg dose of omega - 3 fatty acid was given every day by intragastric gavage. At the end of six weeks the ongoing experiments animals were decapitated and prefrontal cortex were removed. Get in the prefrontal cortex of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH - Px) enzyme activation and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were determined spectrophotometrically.

RESULTS: As a result of our study of omega - 3 fatty acids in the prefrontal cortex of animals SOD and GSH - Px enzyme activity compared to the control group showed a statistically significant increase. MDA levels compared to the control group showed a significant downward trend.

CONCLUSION: As a result, omega - 3 fatty acids in the prefrontal cortex of the brain, a preventive effect against oxidative damage and therefore conducted a protective function on these tissues were detected.
