Amerika Birleşik Devletleri'ndeki Karakter Eğitimi Programları Üzerine Bir Değerlendirme (Georgia ve Florida Örneği)

Öz

Amerika Birleşik Devletleri karakter eğitimi konusunda öne çıkan bir ülkedir. Amerikan eğitim tarihine baktığımızda öncelikle ahlak eğitimi, daha sonra değerler eğitimi ve günümüzde de yaygın ve güncel olarak karakter eğitimi kavramları ile ifade edilen bir değer kazandırma gayretinin varlığı görülmektedir. Öncelikle dini değerlerden desteğini alan ahlak eğitimi anlayışı esas alınırken, daha sonra giderek yaygınlaşan pozitif bilim anlayışı ve sekülerleşmenin etkisiyle devlet okullarında tamamen dinden soyutlanmış değerler eğitimi yaklaşımları benimsenmiş ve uygulanmıştır. Bunların etkinliği tartışılmış ve günümüzde de federal hükümetin teşvik ve desteğiyle hazırlanan karakter eğitimi programları daha çok öne çıkmış ve halen pek çok eyalette zorunlu olarak uygulanmaktadır. Hazırlanan karakter eğitimi programlarının çokluğu, çeşitliliği, uygulamada eyaletlere, eğitim bölgelerine hatta aynı bölgedeki farklı okullara sağlanan serbestlik ve devlet fonlarıyla desteklenen rekabetçi tutum bu alandaki zenginliği artırmaktadır. Bu makalede Amerika'daki gelinen karakter eğitimiyle ilgili tarihi ve yasal süreçle birlikte farklı karakter eğitimi yaklaşımları ve bu yaklaşımları yansıtan program örnekleri değerlendirilmeye çalışılmıştır.
