Abstract

Evaluation of Sustainable Development Awareness Levels of Health Sector Workers: University Hospital Example

Year 2023, Volume: 25 Issue: 3, 1069 - 1098, 09.01.2024

Abstract

Sustainable development is the efficient use of today's resources, taking into account the needs of future generations. The economic, social, and environmental dimensions of sustainable development are closely related to health. Human health depends on environmental sustainability. In this study, it was aimed to determine the awareness levels of health workers on sustainable development. Descriptive survey model was used in the study. The universe of the study consisted of 955 employees working in a university hospital in Istanbul. The sample was not selected for the study, which aimed to reach the entire universe. The study was completed with 344 participants, representing 36% of the population. A personal information form and the Sustainable Development Awareness Scale were used as data collection tools. Descriptive statistics and the Epi Info 7 statistics program were used in the analysis of the data. The level of significance was accepted as p<0.05 in the statistical evaluation. One-sample T test, One-Way ANOVA, One-Sample Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Tukey post hoc, and Spearman correlation tests were used to analyze the data. The general reliability coefficient of the scale was Cronbach α; it was calculated as 0.944. It was found that the social sustainability awareness levels of health workers were higher than economic and environmental sustainability. It was determined that the level of awareness of economic, environmental, and social sustainability increased as the educational status and income level increased. In the study, it was observed that the occupational groups with the highest awareness of sustainable development are physicians, administrative staff, nurses, and midwives. It has been determined that as the working year increases, the level of awareness of sustainable development increases. It is important to carry out studies based on intersectoral cooperation in order to increase awareness of sustainable development among health workers.
