Abstract

Aim: This study aimed to compare macular choroidal thickness in patients with sarcoidosis without ocular involvement and healthy individuals.

Materials and Methods: This retrospective study included 25 eyes of Sarcoidosis patients without ocular involvement, 25 eyes of 25 age and sex matched healthy individuals. Routine ophthalmologic examination information and choroidal thickness records were obtained from the patient files with the help of SD Optical Coherence Tomography (Heidelberg Engineering, Heidelberg, Germany). Choroidal thickness was measured in subfoveal, 1500 µm nasal and 1500 µm temporal dials.

Results: The mean age in patients with sarcoidosis without ocular involvement was 43.02±3.25, while in the control group it was 44.07±4.21 (p=0.65). While there were 12 male patients in sarcoidosis without ocular involvement, there were 11 male patients in the control group (p=0.53). Mean axial length was 22.30±0.46 in sarcoidosis patients without ocular involvement, whereas it was 22.16±0.34 in the control group (p=0.27). Choroidal thickness determined as, in patients without ocular involvement with sarcoidosis in subfoveal dial 248.16±42.7 μ, nasal quadrant of 254.21±42.6 μm temporal quadrant of 260.5±31 μm while in healthy individuals in subfoveal dial 254.13±52.3 μm, nasal quadrant of 259.26±52.3 μm temporal quadrant of 267.19±64.7 μm. No significant difference in choroid thickness was found in subfoveal, temporal and nasal quadrants between patients with sarcoidosis and healthy individuals (p=0.059, p=0.072, p=0.088, respectively).

Conclusion: We found no significant difference between the choroidal thickness in the subfoveal, temporal and nasal quadrants of sarcoidosis patients without ocular involvement and healthy individuals of similar age group. However, it was thought that the reason for not finding a difference between choroid thicknesses may be related to the stage of the patient group and the low number of patients.

Abstract

Amaç: Bu çalışmada oküler tutulumu olmayan sarkoidoz hastaları ile sağlıklı bireylerde maküler koroid kalınlığının karşılaştırılması amaçlanmıştır.

Gereç ve Yöntemler: Bu retrospektif çalışmaya oküler tutulumu olmayan 25 sarkoidoz hastasının 25 gözü ile sağlıklı 25 bireyin 25 gözü dahil edildi. Hasta dosyalarından rutin oftalmolojik muayene bilgileri ve Spektral Domain Optik Koherens Tomografi (Heidelberg Engineering, Heidelberg, Germany) yardımıyla koroid kalınlığı kayıtları alındı. Koroid kalınlığı subfoveal, 1500 µm nazal ve 1500 µm temporal kadranlarda ölçüldü.

Bulgular: Oküler tutulumu olmayan sarkoidozlu hastalarda ortalama yaş 43,02±3,25 iken kontrol grubunda 44,07±4,21 idi (p=0,65). Oküler tutulumu olmayan sarkoidozlu hastalarda 12 erkek olgu varken kontrol grubunda 11 erkek olgu mevcuttu (p=0,53). Ortalama aksiyel uzunluk ise oküler tutulumu olmayan sarkoidozlu hastalarda 22,30±0,46 izlenirken kontrol grubunda 22,16±0,34 bulundu (p=0,27). Koroid kalınlıkları sarkoidozlu hastalarda subfoveal kadranda 248,16±42,7 µm, nazal kadranda 254,21±42,6 µm, temporal kadranda 260,5±31 µm iken sağlıklı bireylerde subfoveal kadranda 254,13±52,3 µm, nazal kadranda 259,26±52,3 µm, temporal kadranda 267,19±64,7 µm olarak saptandı.
