Turhal Fortress in Ancient in the Light of Historical and Archaeological Research

Abstract

Turhal is a district of Tokat province, located in the Central Black Sea Division of the Black Sea
Region. Located in the transition zone from the Black Sea Region to the Central Anatolia Region, Turhal
district is bordered by Tokat province center from the east, Zile district from the west, Pazar district
from the south, Erbaa district and Amasya province from the north. Turhal Fortress, located at a
strategic point where the roads connecting Amasya, Tokat and Zile intersect, was built on a steep and
steep rock block in the town center. Turhal Fortress has been visited by many researchers to date. In
their works, these researchers gave information about the archaeological texture of the fortress and its
current situation at the time they visited. Taking this information and ancient sources into consideration,
we carried out a detailed archaeological survey in Turhal Fortress. As a result of our archaeological
survey, it was seen that many archaeological remains that previous researchers reported to be located
in Turhal Fortress have not survived to the present day. However, the historical and archaeological
data obtained testify that the hill on which Turhal Fortress is located was inhabited uninterruptedly
from the 2nd millennium BC to the Ottoman Period, and that it points out that Turhal Fortress always
maintained its military and economic importance in the Ancient and also that it was gained a separate
administrative identity in the Hellenistic Period.

Tarihi ve Arkeolojik Araştırmalar Işığında Eskiçağ’da Turhal Kalesi

Abstract

Turhal, Karadeniz Bölgesi’nin Orta Karadeniz Bölümü’nde yer alan Tokat iline bağlı bir
ilçedir. Karadeniz Bölgesi’nden İç Anadolu Bölgesi’ne geçiş kuşağında bulunan Turhal ilçesi,
doğusundan Tokat il merkezi, batısından Zile ilçesi, güneyinden Pazar ilçesi, kuzeyinden Erbaa ilçesi
ve Amasya ili ile sınırlıdır. Amasya, Tokat ve Zile’yi birleştiren yolların kesiştiği stratejik bir noktada
yer alan Turhal Kalesi ise ilçe merkezindeki sarp ve dik bir kaya bloğu üzerine kurulmuştur. Turhal
Kalesi, bugüne kadar çok sayıda araştırmacı tarafından ziyaret edilmiştir. Bu araştırmacılar
eserlerinde, kalenin arkeolojik dokusu ve ziyaret ettikleri dönemdeki durumu hakkında bilgi
vermişlerdir. Bu bilgiler ve antik kaynaklar dikkate alınarak Turhal Kalesi’nde tarafımızdan ayrıntılı
bir yüzey araştırması yapılmıştır. Yaptığımız arkeolojik yüzey araştırması sonucunda daha önceki
araştırmacıların Turhal Kalesi’nde yer aldığını bildirdiği birçok arkeolojik kalıntının günümüze kadar
ulaşmadığı görülmüştür. Ancak elde edilen tarihi ve arkeolojik veriler, Turhal Kalesi’nin yer aldığı
tepenin M.Ö. II. binyıldan Osmanlı Dönemi’ne kadar kesintisiz bir şekilde yerleşim gördüğüne tanıklık
etmekte olup, Turhal Kalesi’nin Eskiçağ’da askeri ve ekonomik açıdan önemini her daim koruduğuna,
Hellenistik Dönem’de de idari açıdan ayrı bir kimlik kazandığına işaret etmektedir.
