Abstract
The change that the Union, which has started to be called African Union with its renewed name in
2002, has undergone was not only a revision of the name. It also won the Union new units. The Peace
and Security Council is one of these units. Since the start of the African independence movements in
1950s, intra-continental crises, conflicts and wars have almost never ceased. The Council is a crucial
organ that was founded for the purpose of termination of reduction of these negative events. The
decisions made or to be made by The Peace and Security Council, which is selected by the Executive
Council of African Union and approved by the Assembly of African Union and which has 15 members,
so as to prevent, solve and manage the conflicts are noteworthy. It is of great value that the decisions
made are executed with the Presidency of African Union’s Committee during the operation processes.
Yet, it needs to be underlined that there is no adequate mechanism. Hence the crises and conflicts
persisting in the 21st century Africa show this inadequacy. The article, in this scope, has assessed both
African Union and The Peace and Security Council briefly.
