ON THE PARADOXES OF ROUSSEAU'S POLITICAL THEOLOGY

Abstract

In this article, we will evaluate Rousseau's thesis that there must be a religion at the basis of every political order and the founding function he attributes to religion not just as a source of contradiction within the whole of his political theory, as is usually done, but instead as a fertile opportunity for a new interpretation and introduction to the paradoxes of his political theology. Even though Rousseau himself seems to discuss the civil religion proposal and the religion in general on a basis of usefulness and functionality, we will carry out our reading despite Rousseau himself at times and interpret his thesis on religion on a basis that supports the claim that no political order can survive without building a political theology. In this context, we will first of all point out that the civil religion proposal envisaged in the Social Contract manifests a problem rather than producing a solution. Then, we will try to show that Rousseau's understanding of "general providence" and "general will" is connected with his conception of God and nature, and we will try to reveal the general coordinates of his "natural theology". In the last part of the article, we will try to evaluate the transcendental dimension of Rousseau's political theory, manifested in the legislator figure and his civil religion proposal, through Marcel Gauchet's concept of "debt of meaning".

ROUSSEAU’NUN SİYASAL TEOLOJİSİNİN PARADOKSLARI ÜZERİNE

Abstract

Bu makalede, Rousseau’nun her siyasal düzenin temelinde bir din olması gerektiğine dair tezini ve dine atfettiği kurucu işlevi, çoğu zaman yapıldığı gibi, onun siyasal kuramının bütünü içerisinde salt bir çelişki olarak işaretlemenin ötesine geçip, onun siyasal teolojisinin paradokslarına giriş yapabileceğimiz verimli bir yorum fırsatı olarak değerlendirmeye çalışacağız. Rousseau’nun bizatihi kendisi genel olarak dini ve sivil din önerisini bir yararlılık ve işlevsellik zemininde ele alıyor gözükse bile, kimi zaman okumamızı bizzat Rousseau’ya rağmen gerçekleştirip, onun dine dair tezini, hiçbir siyasal düzenin bir siyasal teoloji inşa etmeden ayakta kalamayacağı varsayımını destekler bir zeminde yorumlamaya çalışacağız. Bu bağlamda, öncelikle, Sözleşme’de öngörülen sivil din önerisinin bir çözümden çok bir problemi ortaya koyduğuna dikkat çekeceğiz. Daha sonra ise Rousseau’nun “genel takdir” ve “genel irade” kavrayışının, Tanrı ve doğa kavramları ile bağlantılı olduğunu göstermeye çalışacak ve onun “doğal teolojisinin” genel koordinatlarını açığa çıkarmayı deneyeceğiz. Makalenin son bölümünde ise, Rousseau’nun siyasal kuramının yasa koyucu figürü ve sivil din önerisinde tezahür eden aşkın boyutunu, Marcel Gauchet’nin “anlam borcu” kavramı aracılığıyla değerlendirmeye çalışacağız
