Kronik Hastalıklar ve Umut Terapisi

Year 2022, Volume: 7 Issue: 1, 185 - 190, 31.01.2022

Abstract

Chronic Diseases and Hope Therapy

Year 2022, Volume: 7 Issue: 1, 185 - 190, 31.01.2022

Abstract

The aim of the present review article was to highlight the importance of hope therapy in chronic diseases and show the utility of this therapy for improving the quality of nursing care services. Despite the improvements in diagnosis and treatment methods in the recent years, an increase in the incidence of chronic diseases has also been observed. The quality of life of patients is also negatively impacted due to the physical, psychological, and socio-economic issues caused by chronic diseases. While a positive or negative significant result is expected in the treatment process of acute diseases, this process is often less evident for chronic diseases. This situation reduces the hope level of patients and negatively influences their coping skills with illness. Chronic diseases have also a multidimensional impact on the lives of patients and their families. Hope becomes even more important during the chronic disease processes as these processes require continuous adaptations. It is emphasized that hope, which is an important element in the life of chronic patients, helps to patients for adapting to the effects of the disease, for increasing the quality of life, and for improving physiological, emotional, mental, and social health. Regarding chronic diseases, nurses have important roles for developing and maintaining coping skills with the illnesses by delivering tailor made nursing interventions. In conclusion, nurses may help patients to pursue their hopes by using the hopelessness level reduction strategies and may provide them a better-quality care.
