Abstract

Medical photography has become a significant tool in disease diagnosis and treatment processes, with wound photography being specifically used for the objective monitoring of chronic wounds. Starting with the invention of photography in the 19th century, medical photography became widespread in surgical and dermatological documentation in the 20th century. Advances in digital cameras and 3D photography technologies have improved the resolution and accuracy of images, allowing for integration into electronic health records. Standard lighting, color accuracy, and scaling are essential elements in wound photography. Various camera types, macro lenses, and lighting techniques enable detailed imaging of wound tissues. This method is used to monitor and classify the treatment process and provides critical data for education and clinical research. Using photographs solely for clinical purposes and adhering to frameworks guided by ethics committees will help protect patient privacy. Technological advancements have also integrated artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted analysis and telemedicine applications into the field. Future technological advancements are expected to increase the use of photography in clinical decision-making processes.
