A Discussion on the Social Aspects of Housing: Examining the Public-Private Space Hierarchy through Comparative Housing Analysis

Abstract

Social structure, economy, and developments in information technologies have effects on residential areas resulting the permeability between public and private sphere uses based on daily life habits, along with the interaction of social and physical environments. In this context, the housing problem demonstrates a multi-layered structure influenced by individual needs as well as societal dimensions, such as social, economic, and cultural factors. The primary objective of this research is to engage in a comprehensive exploration of the social aspect of housing which identifies the individual and society interactions according to the shared space uses and the public-private space hierarchy in residential areas. Additionally, the study seeks to investigate the intricate interplay between the physical environment and the social constructs formulated by inhabitants within their living spaces. This investigation will be centered on examining the spatial activities occurring in the residential environment, and how they contribute to the interactions between individuals and society.

This study has two parts. The first part consists of etymological and conceptual analysis of five housing types among the multiple user types that contain public-domestic space interaction in terms of social aspect of housing. In the second part of the study, two examples from each housing type are spatially analyzed in order to examine the public-domestic sphere interaction in residential areas. The results of these analyses reveal instances where different housing types intersect and overlap. Emphasizing the social aspect of housing, this study opens a discussion on the interaction between public and domestic life through the spatial configuration of shared spaces in residential areas.

Konutun Toplumsal Boyutu Üzerine bir Tartışma: Kamusal-Özel Alan Hiyerarşisinin Karşılaştırmalı Konut Analizi ile İncelenmesi

Abstract

Konut alanlarının mekânsal organizasyonu; toplumsal yapı, ekonomi ve bilgi teknolojilerindeki gelişmeler gibi farklı unsurların etkisiyle görülen sosyal ve fiziki çevre etkileşimi sonucunda, gündelik hayat alışkanlıklarına sahne olan kamusal ve özel alan arası geçirgenlikleri içermektedir. Bu anlamda konut sorunu bireysel ihtiyaçların yanı sıra toplumsal boyutları bulunan ve sosyal, ekonomik, kültürel unsurlardan etkilenen çok katmanlı bir yapı göstermektedir. Bu çalışmada, konutun toplumsal boyutu kavramı ile konut kullanıcılarının mekânsal etkinlikleri ile gerçekleşen birey ve toplum etkileşiminin fiziksel çevre kapsamında konut ve yakın çevresinde ortak mekân kullanımı ve kamusal-özel alan hiyerarşisi incelenmektedir.

İki temel kısımdan oluşan çalışmanın ilk kısmında konutun kamusal özel alan etkileşiminin görüldüğü ve konutun toplumsal boyutunu destekleyen ortak mekân kurgusu bulunan çok kullanıcılı konut türleri arasında kabul edilen; karşılanabilir konut, toplu konut, sosyal konut, kooperatif konut ve paylaşımlı konut olmak üzere beş konut türü etimolojik ve kavramsal olarak incelenmektedir. Çalışmanın ikinci kısmında ise, 2000 yılından sonra tamamlanmış ve kullanımda olan, bu konut türlerinin ikişer örneği üzerine mekânsal analizler yapılmaktadır. Bu analizler sonucunda farklı konut türlerinin birbirini içerdiği ve/veya üst üste düştüğü durumlar ortaya konulmaktadır. Bu çalışma konutun toplumsal boyutunu vurgulayarak konut alanlarındaki ortak mekân kurgusu üzerinden kamusal yaşam ve ev içi yaşam arası etkileşimi tartışmaya açmaktadır.
