Abstract

A General Assessment of Big Data-Based Women's Research

Year 2023, Volume: 2 Issue: 2, 90 - 105, 30.12.2023

Abstract

High pace advancement of Web 2.0 technology and the spread of social media channels, the awareness of big data has made the analyzes using this data type gain popularity rapidly. While this situation led to the emergence of new research opportunities for researchers, it also brought along various challenges. The aim of this study is to evaluate whether the studies conducted with the data obtained from social media reveal a new understanding compared to the studies conducted with traditional research methods. Within the scope of the study, 47 articles on women's studies in Turkey, which were published in the field of social sciences between 2013 and 2022 and whose research data are big data, were taken into consideration. It is aimed to be able to look at the studies using big data from a wider perspective by determining from which channels and how the data sets of these studies are obtained, how large the data set is, which analysis methods are used, which topics the studies are gathered around, and what the limitations are. Thus, an evaluation and discussion about the practices in women's studies using big data is presented.
