Knowledge of Nurses and Midwives about Childhood Autism

Abstract

Introduction: It is important to diagnose autism, which occurs with delayed motor and cognitive development in childhood, through healthy child follow-ups. Knowledge level of nurses and midwives regarding subject contributes to detecting signs of autism at an early stage and providing families about necessary information and support, is known.
Aim: The study was conducted to determine knowledge level of midwives and nurses about childhood autism.
Method: It was conducted in a goverment hospital in Istanbul between August and October 2021. This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted with 150 participants, 113 nurses and 37 midwives. The “Personal Information Form’’ and ‘’Knowledge About Childhood Autism Among Health Workers Questionnaire ’’ scale were used for data collection. Number Cruncher Statistical System program was used to evaluate the data. Descriptive statistics, Mann Whitney U, Student-t, Kruskal Wallis and ANOVA tests were performed for analysis.
Results: Of the participants; 92.7% were women, 56.7% were between 20 - 30 years, 72% were undergraduates,
75.3% were nurses. It was found that the total average score of the participants from the scale was 12.39 ± 3.53. The average knowledge score of the participants was higher for women than for men, for single people than for married people, for those working in child-related fields than for those working in adult-related fields. Conclusion: It was determined that participants had a moderate level of knowledge about childhood autism. It can be suggested that information about autism should be given wider coverage in undergraduate education, more generalizable studies should be conducted

Hemşire ve Ebelerin Çocukluk Çağı Otizmi Hakkındaki Bilgileri

Abstract

Giriş: Çocukluk döneminde motor ve bilişsel gelişimin gecikmesi ile ortaya çıkan otizmin sağlam çocuk izlemleri ile erken dönemde tanılanması önemlidir. Hemşire ve ebelerin bu konu hakkındaki bilgi düzeylerinin otizm belirtilerini erken dönemde saptamalarına ve ailelere gerekli bilgi ve desteği vermelerine katkı sağladığı bilinmektedir.
Amaç: Araştırma, hemşire ve ebelerin çocukluk çağı otizmi hakkındaki bilgi düzeylerini belirlemek amacıyla
gerçekleştirildi.
Yöntem: Araştırma, İstanbul ilinde bulunan bir devlet hastanesinde Ağustos - Ekim 2021 tarihleri arasında yapıldı. Tanımlayıcı ve kesitsel tipte olan bu araştırma 113 hemşire ve 37 ebe olmak üzere 150 katılımcı ile gerçekleştirildi. Veriler “Tanıtıcı Bilgi Formu” ve “Sağlık Çalışanlarının Çocukluk Çağı Otizmi Hakkında Bilgi Anketi” ölçeği kullanılarak elde edildi. Verilerin değerlendirilmesinde Number Cruncher Statistical System programı kullanıldı. Analizler; tanımlayıcı istatistikler ile Mann Whitney U, Student-t, Kruskal Wallis ve Oneway ANOVA testleri ile yapıldı.
Bulgular: Araştırmada; katılımcıların %92,7’sinin kadın, %56,7’sinin 20 - 30 yaş arasında, %72’sinin lisans mezunu, %75,3’ünün hemşire olduğu belirlendi. Katılımcıların ölçekten aldığı toplam puan ortalamasının 12,39 ± 3,53 olduğu bulundu. Katılımcıların bilgi puan ortalamalarının, kadınların erkeklere göre, bekar olanların evlilere göre, çocukla ilgili alanlarda çalışanların yetişkinle ilgili alanlarda çalışanlara göre yüksek olduğu belirlendi.
Sonuç: Araştırmaya katılan hemşire ve ebelerin çocukluk çağı otizmine ilişkin bilgilerinin orta düzeyde olduğu
belirlendi. Otizm ile ilgili bilgilere lisans eğitimde daha geniş yer verilmesi, örneklemi yüksek ve daha genellenebilir çalışmaların yapılması önerilebilir.
