Richard Burton’un iki ciltlik Personal Narrative of a Pilgrimage to al Madinah and Mecca adlı eseri 1855’de yayınladı. Eserin etkisi ve kaynak oluşu günümüze kadar devam etmiştir. Fakat eserin muhtevası ve içeriği konusunda ciddi kuşkuların dile getirilmesi geç tarihlidir. Prof. Dr. Reinhard Schulze’nin Richard Burton in Makka adlı makalesinde adı geçen kitabın masa başı bir çalışma olduğunu ispatlamıştır. Eserin muhtevasındaki çelişkiler ve maddi yanlışları delilleriyle göstermiştir. Richard Burton’un Hac için Mekke ve Medine’de bulunduğu senelerde Hicaz bölgesinde cereyan eden hadiseler hakkında verdiği bilgiler noksan veya en önemlileri eserde yer almaz. Gereksiz detaylar ve alıntılarla süslenmiş eserinde inandırıcı gelmeyen pek çok konuyu da barındırır. Başta İslam ansiklopedileri ve saha ile ilgili çalışmalarının 150 yıldır tek başucu kaynağı olan Burton’un bu eseri artık kaynak olarak güvenirliliğini yitirmiştir

Richard Burton in Mecca

Personal Narrative of a Pilgrimage to al Madinah and Mecca by Richard Burton was published in two volumes in 1855. This work has become a milestone and commonly used as a source since then. However it was not long ago that the context of this book started to be criticized. In his article called Richard Burton in Mecca, Prof. Dr. Reinhard Schulze proved that this book is actually meant to be used as a deskbook. He indicated the discrepancies and mistakes present in this work through necessary evidences. For instance, the incidents which took place in Hejaz during Richard Burton’s visit to Mecca and Madinah weren’t sufficiently recorded; his account of the most important events happened at that time is lacking. Morever, it covers unreliable statements full of unnecessary details and quotations . Though being a reference book for Islamic research areas as well as encyclopedias for 150 years, Tim Burton’s work has unfortunately lost its credibility
