Determination of Fear of Birth, Traumatic Birth Perception, and Empathy Skills of Nursing Students During the Clinical Practice Process of the Perinatology Unit

Öz

Objective: It is to determine the perception of traumatic birth, fear of birth and empathy skills of nursing students during the clinical practice process of the perinatology unit.
Materials and Methods: The descriptive research population consisted of nursing students at a state university. The sample was 126 female nursing students who went into clinical practice in the perinatology unit in the 2021-2022 academic year and met the inclusion criteria. Data were collected with the Personal Information Form, the Pre- Pregnancy Fear of Birth Scale, the Traumatic Birth Perception Scale, and the Toronto Empathy Scale before and after perinatology unit clinical practice.
Results: 73.1% of the students before the clinical practices and 50.8% after the practices stated that they wanted to have a child in the future. While the rate of students who stated that they want to give birth vaginally in the future was 62.7% before the clinical practice, it was 57.9% after the clinical practice. It was determined that the students' fear of birth (40,82±11,18; 41,65±12,27), perception of traumatic birth (65,92±25,80; 66,84±28,97), and empathy scores (56,34± 5,97; 56,23± 5,80) were similar before and after the practices (p>0,05). There is a strong positive relationship between students' perception of traumatic birth and birth fears both before (r=0.709 p<0.01) and after clinical practice (r=0.794 p<0.01).
Conclusion: There was no significant change in the fear of birth, perception of traumatic birth, and empathy tendencies of the students before and after the clinical practice. As a woman from the group of women the students care for, the fact that she is not affected by the fear of birth, the traumatic perception of birth, and empathy is considered important in terms of professional knowledge and behavior.

Hemşirelik Öğrencilerinin Perinatoloji Servisi Klinik Uygulama Sürecinde Doğum Korkusu, Travmatik Doğum Algısı ve Empati Becerilerinin Belirlenmesi

Öz

Amaç: Hemşirelik öğrencilerinin perinatoloji servisi klinik uygulama sürecinde travmatik doğum algısı, doğum korkusu ve empati becerilerinin belirlenmesidir.
Gereç ve Yöntem: Tanımlayıcı tipteki araştırma evrenini bir devlet üniversitesinin hemşirelik bölümü öğrencileri oluşturmuştur. Örneklem 2021-2022 öğretim yılında perinatoloji servisinde klinik uygulamaya çıkan ve dâhil edilme kriterlerini karşılayan 126 kadın hemşirelik öğrencisidir. Veriler Kişisel Bilgi Formu, Gebelik Öncesi Doğum Korkusu, Ölçeği Travmatik Doğum Algısı Ölçeği ve Toronto Empati Ölçeği ile perinatoloji servisi klinik uygulama öncesi ve sonrası toplanmıştır.
Bulgular: Öğrencilerin klinik uygulama öncesi %73,1’i, uygulama sonrası ise %50,8’i ileride çocuk sahibi olmak istediklerini belirtmişlerdir. İleride vajinal yolla doğum yapmak istediğini belirten öğrenciler klinik uygulama öncesi %62,7 iken, sonrasında %57,9’dur. Öğrencilerin klinik uygulama öncesi ve sonrasında doğum korkusu (40,82±11,18; 41,65±12,27), travmatik doğum algısı (65,92±25,80; 66,84±28,97) ve empati puanlarının (56,34± 5,97; 56,23± 5,80) benzer olduğu saptanmıştır (p>0,05). Öğrencilerin hem klinik uygulama öncesi (r=0,709 p<0,01) hem de sonrası travmatik doğum algısı ve doğum korkuları arasında (r=0,794 p<0,01) pozitif yönlü güçlü düzeyde bir ilişki bulunmaktadır.
Sonuç: Öğrencilerin klinik uygulama öncesi ve sonrası doğum korkusu, travmatik doğum algısı ve empati eğilimlerinde anlamlı bir değişiklik olmamıştır. Öğrencilerin bakım verdiği kadın grubundan bir kadın olarak doğum korkusu, doğumun travmatik algılanması ve empati bakımından etkilenmemiş olması profesyonel bilgi birikimi ve davranış açısından önemli kabul edilmektedir.
