SOCIAL AND MORAL BREAKDOWN OCCURED IN ISTANBUL DURING THE FIRST WORLD WAR AND THE INVASION PERIOD (1914-1922) The First World War and the invasion years following that caused crucial problems in Istanbul. People of Istanbul became incapable of gaining even their basic necessities. During that period, a great social and moral breakdown had been taken place for long years in Istanbul. The Russian immigrants that came to Istanbul radically changed the cultural genetic structure of the Muslim people. In a short time, drugs, gambling, venereal diseases and epidemics appeared in the city. Women and children were affected first and foremost from the situation that the city was in. Many families fell in pieces, women who lost their husbands in the war were widowed, and with this great family crisis, the women and children were vulnerable to abuse. The ethical problems happened in the society also had influence on the public order of the city. Istanbul became a city in which the serious crimes such as robbery, seizure, rape and murder were committed at any time.

1. Dünya Savaşı ve sonrasında yaşanan işgal yılları İstanbul'da hayati sorunların ortaya çıkmasına neden olmuştur. İstanbul halkı temel ihtiyaç maddelerini bile temin edemez duruma gelmiştir. İstanbul bu süreçte uzun yıllar etkisini sürdürecek büyük bir sosyal ve ahlaki çözülme yaşamıştır. İstanbul'a gelen Beyaz Rus göçmenler, Müslüman ahalinin adeta kültürel genetik yapısını kökünden değiştirmiştir. Şehirde kısa sürede uyuşturucu, kumar, fuhuş, zührevi ve diğer salgın hastalıklar baş göstermiştir. Aile kurumu da bu ortamdan büyük ölçüde etkilenmiştir. Pek çok aile parçalanmış, savaşta eşlerini kaybeden kadınlar dul kalmış ve bu büyük aile kriziyle kadınlar ve çocuklar suistimale açık hale gelmiştir. Toplumda yaşanan ahlaki sorunlar şehrin asayişine de yansımıştır. İstanbul, hırsızlık, gasp, tecavüz ve cinayet gibi ağır suçların her an işlendiği bir şehir haline gelmiştir.
