Hidden Care: Traces of Women’s Experiences in the Film “Vera Drake”

Öz

This study conducts an in-depth analysis of director Mike Leigh’s 2004 film “Vera Drake”, within the framework of feminist theorist Nel Noddings’ ethics of care. The primary objective of this study is to meticulously examine the complex relationship between the gender dynamics represented in the film and the ethics of care while also contributing to the examination of the phenomenon of abortion within the context of the body and power relationship. Content analysis and critical discourse analysis methods are employed as fundamental analytical tools for this examination. Particularly, the main character Vera and her acts of care towards women with different experiences form the focal point for an in-depth exploration of women’s relationships from a gender perspective. The findings demonstrate how relationships among women are shaped by gender ideology and how male characters in the film reinforce the gender hierarchy. Additionally, the relationship between male and female bodies in relation to power is addressed within the context of the ethics of care, analyzing the impact of gender on body politics. The results of this research underscore the importance of approaching women’s experiences from a feminist perspective, and “Vera Drake” is evaluated as an example of ethics of care.

Gizli İhtimam: “Vera Drake” Filminde Kadın Deneyimlerinin İzleri

Öz

Bu çalışma, yönetmen Mike Leigh’in 2004 yapımı “Vera Drake” filmini, feminist teorisyen Nel Noddings’in ihtimam etiği analizi çerçevesinde derinlemesine incelemektedir. Bu çalışmanın temel amacı, filmde temsil edilen toplumsal cinsiyet dinamikleri ile ihtimam etiği arasındaki karmaşık ilişkiyi ayrıntılı bir şekilde analiz etmek ve aynı zamanda kürtaj olgusunun beden ve iktidar ilişkisi bağlamında incelenmesine katkı sağlamaktır. İçerik analizi ve eleştirel söylem analizi yöntemleri, bu inceleme için temel analitik araçlar olarak kullanılmaktadır. Özellikle ana karakter Vera ve onun farklı deneyimlere sahip kadınlara yönelik ihtimam eylemleri, kadınlar arasındaki ilişkilerin toplumsal cinsiyet perspektifiyle derinlemesine incelenmesi için odak noktası oluşturmaktadır. Bulgular, kadınlar arasındaki ilişkilerin toplumsal cinsiyet ideolojisi tarafından nasıl şekillendirildiğini ve filmdeki erkek karakterlerin toplumsal cinsiyet hiyerarşisini nasıl pekiştirdiğini göstermektedir. Ayrıca, kadın ve erkek bedenlerinin iktidarla olan ilişkisi ihtimam etiği bağlamında ele alınarak, toplumsal cinsiyetin beden politikalarına etkisi analiz edilmektedir. Bu araştırma sonuçları, feminist bir bakış açısının kadın deneyimlerine nasıl yaklaşılması gerektiğini vurgularken, “Vera Drake” filmi de bir ihtimam etiği örneği olarak değerlendirilmektedir.
