SPACES IN FLUX: DOCUMENTING MIGRATION, BELONGING, AND SOCIO-SPATIAL TRANSFORMATION IN BASMA[HA]NE, IZMIR

Öz

Basmane is one of the oldest settlement areas in Izmir, which has been welcoming diverse internal and international migrant populations throughout its urban history, thus having become closely associated with the notion of “outsiders”. This paper recognizes Basmane as an urban space shaped by a multifaceted history of migration, where each migrant's experience contributes to interconnected socio-spatial, socio-cultural, and socio-economic layers, prompting the need for novel spatial interpretations. In this fashion, the study acknowledges migration as a transformative socio-spatial force, and seeks to explore how migrants contribute to the spatial fabric in regenerating a sense of home in the area. To achieve this aim, this paper focuses on three individual cases: (a) a courtyard/home, (b) a hotel/cortijo, and (c) a public park. Each case provides the study with a particular insight concerning the spatial practices of a different migrant profile addressing different spatio-temporal layers of the area, simultaneously converging in the present moment. The study draws on field research that involves semi-structured interviews conducted with relevant actors in the area. Building on these narratives and employing a moderate participant observation approach, the study supports the assertion that spaces of migration cannot be investigated without taking into consideration the agency of migrants. Moreover, it elucidates how migrants grapple, even in the most challenging socio-spatial scenarios, with establishing a sense of place, revealing their struggles (and at times, failures) in maintaining such endeavors, and exposing the most fragile connections they form with the spaces they inhabit.

GÖÇÜN SOSYO-MEKANSAL DÖNÜŞÜM İÇİN BİR KATALİZÖR OLARAK İNCELEMESİ: BASMA[HA]NE, İZMİR ÖRNEĞİ

Öz

Basmane, kentsel tarihinde çok çeşitli domestik ve uluslararası göçmen nüfusuna ev sahipliği yaparak "yabancı" kavramıyla yakından ilişkilendirilmiş, İzmir'in en eski yerleşim bölgelerinden biridir. Bu makale, Basmane'yi göç tarihine dayanan çok yönlü bir kentsel alan olarak tanıyarak, burasıyla temas etmiş her göçmenin deneyiminin iç içe geçmiş sosyo-mekansal, sosyo-kültürel ve sosyo-ekonomik katmanlara katkıda bulunduğu, bu nedenle yeni mekansal yorumlamalara muhtaç bir yer olduğunu iddia eder. Bu bağlamda, çalışma göçü dönüştürücü bir sosyo-mekansal araç olarak kabul eder ve göçmenlerin bölgede mekana aidiyet oluşturma çabalarıyla mekansal dokuya nasıl katkıda bulunduklarını keşfetmeyi amaçlar. Bu amaçla makale üç farklı vakaya odaklanır: (a) bir avlu/ev, (b) bir otel/cortijo ve (c) bir park/oyun alanı. Her bir vaka, farklı bir göçmen profilinin mekansal pratikleriyle ilgili bir perspektifi çalışmaya sunar; bölgenin farklı mekan-zamansal katmanlarına işaret eder ve bu katmanlar aynı anda günümüzde birleşir. Çalışma, alanda ilgili aktörlerle yapılan yarı yapılandırılmış görüşmeleri içeren saha araştırmasına dayanmaktadır. Bu anlatılara yazarların saha gözlemlerine dayanarak, çalışma; göçmenlerin failliği/eylemliliğinin dikkate alınmadan göç mekanlarının incelenemeyeceği savını destekler. Ayrıca, göçmenlerin en zorlu sosyo-mekansal senaryolarda bile, yer ve aidiyet hissi oluşturma konusunda nasıl mücadele ettiklerini, bu süreçte karşılaştıkları zorlukları (ve bazen başarısızlıklarını) ve mesken tuttukları mekanlarla kurdukları en kırılgan bağları ortaya koymaya çalışır.
