Intentions of individuals aged 18-65 to perpetrate violence against healthcare workers: A descriptive study

Öz

Objective: This study was conducted to determine the intentions of individuals between the ages of 18-65 to use violence against healthcare workers and the factors affecting them. Method: This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted with 312 individuals between the ages of 18-65 living in Turkey. The data were collected with the Participant Information Form and the Intention to Violence Against Health Worker Scale. The research was carried out between 15.12.2022 and 15.03.2023 by online data collection method via Google forms. SPSS 22.0 package program was used in the analysis of the data. Results: The mean age of the participants was 37.73 ± 11.45 and 56% were women. The mean scores of the sub-dimensions of the scale of intention to inflict violence on healthcare workers; intention 1.17, past behavior 1.30, attitude towards behavior 2.89, subjective norm 2.21, and perceived behavioral control 1.65. Among the factors affecting the intention to commit violence, it was determined that the attitude towards the behavior had the highest effect. Conclusion: It was found that the willingness of the participants to display violent behavior, their past behaviors and their perception of control of using violence were low. It has been determined that there is partial pressure from the environment in their intention to use violence and they perceive the violent behavior as positive.

18-65 Yaş arası bireylerin sağlık çalışanlarına şiddet uygulama niyetleri: Tanımlayıcı bir çalışma

Öz

Amaç: Bu çalışma, 18-65 yaş arasındaki bireylerin sağlık çalışanlarına şiddet uygulama niyetleri ve etkileyen faktörlerin belirlenmesi amacıyla yapılmıştır. Yöntem: Bu kesitsel tanımlayıcı araştırma, Türkiye’de yaşayan 18-65 yaş arasındaki 312 bireyle yapılmıştır. Veriler, Katılımcı Bilgi Formu ve Sağlık Çalışanına Şiddet Uygulama Niyeti Ölçeği ile toplanmıştır. Araştırma, 15.12.2022-15.03.2023 tarihleri arasında Google Forms üzerinden online veri toplama yöntemiyle gerçekleştirilmiştir. Verilerin analizinde, SPSS 22.0 paket programı kullanılmıştır. Bulgular: Katılımcıların, yaş ortalaması 37.73 ± 11.45 ve %56’sı kadındır. Sağlık çalışanlarına şiddet uygulama niyeti ölçeğinin alt boyutlarının puan ortalamaları; niyet 1.17, geçmişteki davranış 1.30, davranışa yönelik tutum 2.89, sübjektif norm 2.21 ve algılanan davranış kontrolü 1.65’dir. Şiddet uygulama niyetini etkileyen faktörler arasında, davranışa yönelik tutumun en yüksek etkiye sahip olduğu belirlenmiştir. Sonuç: Katılımcıların, şiddet uygulama davranışı sergileme isteğinin, geçmişteki davranışlarının ve şiddet uygulama kontrol algılarının düşük olduğu bulunmuştur. Şiddet uygulama niyetlerinde kısmen çevre baskısının olduğu ve şiddet davranışını olumlu olarak algıladıkları belirlenmiştir.
