Women in the Media: Portraits of Violence and Struggle in War and Conflict Photographs

Öz

There are many important reasons for how women are represented in the media in news of war and conflict. The representation of women in war and conflict news offers the opportunity to question traditional gender roles and stereotypes. The media can contribute to gender equality by representing women not only as victims, but also as individuals who resist, lead or play an active role. As a result, presenting the violence experienced by women accurately and ethically in war and conflict news contributes to society having a more conscious, egalitarian and fair perspective. Based on these views, within the scope of the research, a content analysis of women-oriented news photographs of the news about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which started on October 7, 2023, was conducted. News photographs of women published by Anadolu Agency on its website between October 7, 2023 and December 5, 2023 constitute the sample of the research. Content analysis was applied to a total of 41 women-focused news photographs. In news visuals, women came to the fore mostly in relation to social events. Women, who are the subject of the news mostly by taking part in anti-war protests, come to the fore in the categories of resistant, strong and determined. In addition, in the analysis of the photographs, the psychological violence experienced by women is seen more than physical violence. The women in the visuals are presented as victims the most, after the representation of resisters.

Medyada Kadınlar: Savaş ve Çatışma Fotoğraflarında Şiddetin ve Mücadelenin Portresi

Öz

Savaş ve çatışma haberlerinde kadınların medyada nasıl temsil edildiği, birçok önemli nedene sahiptir. Savaş ve çatışma haberlerinde kadınların temsil edilmesi, geleneksel cinsiyet rollerini ve stereotiplerini sorgulama fırsatı sunmaktadır. Medya, kadınların sadece mağdur olarak değil, aynı zamanda direniş gösteren, liderlik eden veya aktif rol oynayan bireyler olarak da temsil edilmesiyle cinsiyet eşitliğine katkı sağlayabilir. Sonuç olarak, kadınların savaş ve çatışma haberlerinde yaşadıkları şiddetin doğru ve etik bir şekilde sunulması, toplumun daha bilinçli, eşitlikçi ve adil bir perspektife sahip olmasına katkı sağlar. Bu görüşlerden hareketle, araştırma kapsamında, 7 Ekim 2023 tarihinde başlayan İsrail-Filistin çatışmasını konu alan haberlerin kadın odaklı haber fotoğraflarının içerik analizi yapılmıştır. Anadolu Ajansının konu ile ilgili 7 Ekim 2023-5 Aralık 2023 tarih aralığında web sitesi üzerinden yayınladığı kadınların bulunduğu haber fotoğrafları araştırmanın örneklemini oluşturmaktadır. Toplamda kadın odaklı 41 haber fotoğrafına içerik analizi uygulanmıştır. Haber görsellerinde kadınlar, daha çok toplumsal olaylarla ilişkili olarak ön plana çıkmıştır. En fazla savaş karşıtı protestolarda yer alarak haberlere konu olan kadınlar, direnişçi, güçlü ve kararlı kategorilerinde ön plana çıkmaktadır. Ayrıca fotoğrafların analizinde kadınların yaşadıkları psikolojik şiddet fiziksel şiddetten daha fazla görülmektedir. Görsellerdeki kadınlar direnişçi temsilinden sonra en fazla mağdur olarak sunulmuştur.
