THE NAQSHİ-KHALİDİ TRADİTİON İN ERZİNCAN
Öz
Erzincan is one of the important Anatolian cities in religious and Sufi
terms. As from the conquest of Anatolia, the city became the cradle of eminent
figures associated with large Sufi orders such as Kubrawiyya, Mawlawiyya,
Khalwatiyya, Qadiriyya, and Naqshbandiyya and was exposed in particular to the
impact of Khalidiyya, a subdivision of the Naqshbandi order, which spread
rapidly throughout Anatolia from the 19th century on. The first
branch of Khalidiyya was established when Abdullah Mekki, one of Mavlana Khalid’s
successors, gave khilafa to Mehmed
Hayyat Vehbi, who was a tailor and thus known as Terzi Baba. This branch
persisted with the latter’s successors such as Fehmi Efendi, Abdussamed Efendi,
Süleyman Efendi (who was also known as Leblebici Baba and who was an illiterate
poet having a Divan), and Haci Hafiz Efendi (also known as Mehmed Rüşdü).
Thanks to these names, the first branch carried out important missions to
spread the tariqa in and around
Erzincan.
Another branch of Khalidiyya still existing in Erzincan has come through
the chain that starts with Abdurrahman Taghi and goes on with Muhammed Sami
Efendi (also known as Pir-i Sami or the second master). Among the names who has
maintained this second branch following Pir-i Sami are Muhammed Beşir Erzincani,
Musa Dede Bayburdi (also known as Dede Paşa), and Abdurrahim Reyhan.
This paper informs of the life stories, works, and Sufi ideas and practices of the eminent figures of the Khalidi tradition that gave direction to the religious and spiritual life in Erzincan.
