An Unexpected Diagnosis Behind Common Pediatric Symptoms: A Mediastinal Teratoma Case in Primary Care
Abstract
Mediastinal tumors are rare and heterogeneous entities in childhood and may present with non-specific symptoms, making early recognition in primary care challenging. This case report describes a pediatric patient diagnosed with an anterior mediastinal mature cystic teratoma following an initial presentation with common upper respiratory tract complaints. This case emphasizes the importance of diagnostic vigilance in primary care and highlights the role of the family physician in recognizing atypical presentations of serious conditions. Through timely diagnostic evaluation, care coordination and advocacy, family physicians play a key role in enabling early diagnosis and effective management of rare but clinically significant diseases.
