Bluetooth-controlled smart home automation with adaptive lighting and security features

Abstract

Smart home technologies play a crucial role in energy efficiency and user comfort. However, commercial systems are often expensive and lack customizable security features. This study presents a cost-effective, hybrid-controlled smart home automation prototype designed with microcontroller (MCU) and Bluetooth communication. The system integrates environmental sensing such as temperature, humidity, light, and motion with a Finite State Machine (FSM) control algorithm. A unique “Black Box” feature has been developed using EEPROM to record critical security events and timestamps. The system is controlled via a custom Android application developed with Mobile Application Interface (MIT App Inventor), allowing for both manual override and autonomous operation. Experimental results show that the adaptive lighting algorithm, which employs an exponential smoothing filter, prevents flickering, and the security recording system successfully logs all unauthorized attempts. The proposed system offers a robust application model for Internet of Things (IoT) and embedded systems.
