Nonverbal Behavior Analysis in Criminal Interrogation

Yıl 2024, Cilt: 6 Sayı: 1, 22 - 41, 31.03.2024

Öz

One of the important issues in criminal interrogations is the information obtained from the person being interrogated. It can be obtained verbally as well as non-verbally. This review aims to discuss in general terms the things to consider when analyzing nonverbal behavior in criminal interrogations. In this context, the basic principles of analyzing nonverbal behaviors are discussed in detail, and their role in interrogations is emphasized. While addressing these issues, the sub-dimensions of nonverbal behaviors are categorized and explained as facial expressions, voice, gestures, and other body movements. Moreover, the profile of people who lie is presented considering the information in meta-analysis studies. Finally, a Nonverbal Behavior Training Program has been proposed to improve the nonverbal behavior skills of professionals participating in criminal interrogations. In this way, it is thought that relevant professional staff will contribute to the investigation process.
