REVIEW AND DESCRIPTION OF FOODS AND BEVERAGES ALONG WITH ASSOCIATED EATING HABITS IN SHAHNAMEH FERDOWSI
Abstract
Shahnameh is one of the most famous epic works, written by Ferdowsi the famous Iranian poet in fifth century. In this book various foods and beverages along with their associated eating habits can be seen which mostly date back to the Iranian pre-Islamic periods. The present article based on the poems of Shahnameh and using the data of old medical books, culinary treatises, itineraries and Pahlavi texts tries to review and describe the foods such as fruit, nuts, dairy, meaty foods, etc., and beverages such as Shiraz, Pest syrup and Foga; also associated eating habits like barsom and washing hands in Shahnameh which not only can solve the problems of many verses and concepts from literary aspect; but also can be useful for interdisciplinary researches from anthropology and sociology points of views.
