The Annexation of Crimea by Russia and Its Potential Impacts on the Countries Having Border With Russia

Abstract

Following the dissolution of Soviet Union, the Russian Federation that inherited its political system has had doubts about the post-Soviet states being a member of the international western organizations. Therefore influencing these countries politically has been one of the foreign policy priorities of Russia. Russia was highly annoyed as Ukraine, a former Soviet Union country which is very important country for Russia in terms of historical, geopolitical and economic aspects, opted for closer relations with West than those with Russia in its future. Consequently Crimea was annexed by Russia following an operation conducted by this country. This case suggests whether the neighboring countries of Russia which have ethnic Russians in considerable numbers may face similar situations. This article is built on this question. The article discusses the reasons of annexation of Crimea by Russia and its potential impacts on the countries having land border with Russia.
