ON MUSICAL FORMALISM

Abstract

As a result of the philosophical arguments on searching the nature of music, many perspectives and doctrines emerged. Musical Formalism, which was founded by Eduard Hanslicks ideas, is one of them. In this paper, musical formalism will be explained and the formalist views of two important scholars, Eduard Hanslick and Peter Kivy, will be scrutinized. Examining the conservative formalism of Hanslick and a moderate formalism of Kivy is believed to create a more profound ground for discussing musical formalism and to provide inspiration for future researchers.
