THE CONCEPT OF FATE IN BALLADS

Abstract

Ballad is one of the forms of Turkish folk music, putting the joy, fervour, sadness, grief and such emotions of the people in sincere and natural expressions accompanied by saz. Music has its peculiar place in the cultural life of the folk. Folk ballads have passed through the public taste for centuries and survived into the present through transfer from ear to ear. Lyric accompanies melody in the ballads. Expressing a given meaning, the lyrics of ballads add a character to the melody. Just as various subjects could be put into lyrics and saz in ballads, some concepts that people load with meanings of their own take place in them. This study is thus designed to probe into the underlying meanings and associations of the concept felek (fate) in folk culture and life. The field of the study consists of 117 ballads containing the word felek, among the 4616 works available in TRT repertoire of Turkish Folk Music. Documentary review and literature review methods were used in the study. The purpose of the study is to examine the subjects of ballads from the viewpoints of folklore and philosophy, and to reveal the rich expression styles of the folk culture from a scientific perspective.
