Could Memory Be One of the Reasons for the Spread of Disinformation/Misinformation?

Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine how memory errors, defined by Bartlett through the concepts of rationalization, leveling, and sharpening, emerge in news transmission, and to explore their relationship to disinformation and misinformation, which constitute the basis of post-truth debates. The study adopted a qualitative design, employing Bartlett’s serial reproduction method. Forty participants, selected via questionnaire from among 48 volunteers, were randomly assigned to 8 chains of 5 individuals. The serial reproduction of two different news items, one pro-Palestinian and one pro-Israeli, within each chain was analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The findings indicate that during the process of serial reproduction, news expressions were often generalized, condensed, or rendered meaningless through omissions, while in some cases their meaning was fractured by completely altering the expressions

Hâfıza, Dezenformasyonun/Yanlış Bilginin Yayılmasının Sebeplerinden Biri Olabilir Mi? Filistin Haberlerinin Seri Yeniden Üretimi Üzerine Bir Uygulama

Year 2025, Volume: 15 Issue: 2, 543 - 588, 31.12.2025
