Relationship Between Digital Literacy, Artificial Intelligence Readiness, and Professionalism Among Dental Students
Abstract
Objectives: This study examines clinical dental students' AI readiness, digital literacy, and professionalism. Additionally, the study examined how medical AI preparation mediates the influence of digital literacy on professionalism.
Materials and Methods: The sample for this cross-sectional study comprised 210 clinical-stage students at the Sivas Cumhuriyet University Faculty of Dentistry. Data were gathered applying the Digital Literacy Scale (DLS), the Medical Artificial Intelligence Readiness Scale (MAIRS-MS), and the Professionalism Assessment Scale (PAS). Analyses were performed using Spearman's rho correlation and path analysis (p<0.05).
Results: Significant positive correlations were found between digital literacy and professionalism ( r = 0.407) and MAIRS-MS (r = 0.435) (p < 0.001). Path analysis demonstrated that digital literacy is a direct and strong predictor of professionalism (β = 0.841) and MAIRS-MS (β = 0.628). MAIRS-MS did not have a direct effect on professionalism (p = 0.765). However, significant correlations were found between the 'Ethics' sub-dimension of MAIRS-MS and the 'Responsibility' (r = 0.205) and 'Relationship/Development' (r = 0.196) dimensions of professionalism (p < 0.01). Furthermore, empathy scores significantly declined as students progressed through their academic terms (p < 0.05).
Conclusions: Digital literacy is a critical foundation for dental students' professionalism and adaptation to medical AI. The lack of a direct correlation between professionalism and medical AI readiness suggests that AI is not yet fully integrated into professional identity. However, the finding that students who understand the ethical dimension of AI foster better professional behavior points to the necessity of integrating AI ethics courses into professional training.
